Helping Children Cope in Unsettling Times

Current world events are very unsettling. The war, economic difficulties, and the nation's heightened state of alert can cause justifiable anxiety. The uncertainty of terrorist warnings can be especially unnerving. Children may be confused or fearful that they or their loved ones are at risk. Adults need to help children feel safe, even if they themselves feel vulnerable. Parents and teachers can help children understand what is happening factually, how events do or do not impact their lives, and how to cope with their reactions.

Schools and parents need to assess what level of support children in their care need, but following suggestions may help children cope.

Townie Project

Thousands of students and Townie fans from around the state pass through the East Providence High School Gymnasium every year. Built in the 1950’s, the EP Gymnasium was constructed to provide a top notch health education facility for the students as well as provide the finest athletic programs in the state a resource for strengthening athleticism, team building, and leadership development. For many years, the community has enjoyed thousands of memorable events held inside the East Providence Gymnasium.

Due to a struggling economy, lack of funds, and low morale in the city, what was once considered the top health education facility in the state is now viewed as a symbol of our trying times. D’amours Step, working closely with city leadership and local teachers, has constructed a few excellent fundraising projects that will engage, teach, and empower thousands of students in our city who desperately need a morale boost and a vehicle to contribute to their community. We are confident that the magnitude and excitement surrounding this project will easily generate donations namely from alumni and students that will drive this project to completion. What we are sincerely asking is a little support from you and your company to make this project the biggest uplift the community has seen in years. It is also a perfect opportunity to teach our students and individuals in the community a priceless lesson; when tough times arise, you must step up and BE the CHANGE you want to see.

Please join D'amours Step for the EAST PROVIDENCE GYMNASIUM RESTORATION PROJECT, and help unite our community and empower our most precious resource, OUR STUDENTS!

D'amours Step is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization approved by the IRS.

EVERY DOLLAR donated to this amazing effort goes directly to building a beautiful health education facility to empower the students of East Providence. Every member for D'amours Step including engineers, medical professionals, and businessmen and women work voluntarily to assure YOU that every dollar you donate makes the greatest impact possible!

34th Annual Pan-Mass Challenge

The Pan-Mass Challenge is an annual bike-a-thon and a pioneer of the athletic fundraising industry that today raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country. The organization was founded in 1980 and has since raised $338 million for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PMC is a model of fundraising efficiency. The PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause.

The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge is a fully supported bike-a-thon — with food and water stops, mechanical and medical assistance, luggage transportation, and lodging — that runs through 46 towns across Massachusetts. Approximately 5,500 cyclists ride in the event. Cyclists choose from 11 routes of varying mileage designed to cater to all levels of cycling strength and time availability. There are six two-day routes that range from 153 to 190 miles and five one-day rides that range from 25 to 110 miles.

The 34th annual PMC is set for August 3 & 4, 2013. The ride has two starting lines in Sturbridge and in Wellesley, and various finish lines in Provincetown, Bourne, Wellesley and Foxborough (Patriot Place). Routes offer one-day and two-day riding options.

Each year, nearly 5,200 cyclists travel from more than 35 states and eight countries to ride in the PMC. Nearly 350 riders are cancer survivors or current patients. Some PMC cyclists are weekend warriors, others are trained triathletes. Many PMC participants rode in honor of a family member or friend fighting the disease. Cyclists range in age from 13 to 87.
