LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — An intense fire ravaged a three-story apartment building before dawn Thursday, killing four adults and three children, forcing tenants to jump or hand their children to safety, and leading to dramatic rescues from upper floors. The victims in this former mill city about 25 miles northwest of Boston were all found in units on the top floor of the building, which had a liquor store on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors, fire officials said. To read more about this story, please click here

The 2014 Pan-Mass Challenge

The Pan-Mass Challenge is a pioneer of the athletic fundraising industry and today raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country. On August 2 & 3, 2014, more than 5,500 cyclists will ride in the 35th annual event with the goal of raising $40 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The PMC, an annual bike-a-thon that spans up to 190 miles, is a model of fundraising efficiency, donating 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to the cause. Since the PMC's 1980 inception, the event has raised $414 million. For more information about the PMC, visit pmc.org.

When: The 35th annual PMC is set for August 2 & 3, 2014. The ride has two starting lines in Sturbridge and in Wellesley, and various finish lines in Provincetown, Bourne, Wellesley and Foxborough (Patriot Place). Routes offer one-day and two-day riding options.

The Ride: The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge is a fully supported bike-a-thon — with food and water stops, mechanical and medical assistance, luggage transportation, and lodging — that runs through 46 towns across Massachusetts. Approximately 5,500 cyclists ride in the event. Cyclists choose from 12 routes of varying mileage designed to cater to all levels of cycling strength and time availability. There are six two-day routes that range from 153 to 190 miles and five one-day rides that range from 25 to 110 miles.
