LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — An intense fire ravaged a three-story apartment building before dawn Thursday, killing four adults and three children, forcing tenants to jump or hand their children to safety, and leading to dramatic rescues from upper floors. The victims in this former mill city about 25 miles northwest of Boston were all found in units on the top floor of the building, which had a liquor store on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors, fire officials said. To read more about this story, please click here

iPods for Wounded Veterans

Registered Massachusetts 501(c)(3) Corporation

Chairman, Paul Cardello

Founded 2011

Who we serve:

  • Badly wounded U.S. service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard.
  • All have served in the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars and have recently been injured and are receiving treatment at Walter Reid Military Medical Center in Washington, DC and For Belvoir Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, VA.
  • Many are single, double or triple amputees, have severe brain injuries and/or suffer from Post traumatic stress disorder.

How we serve them:

We aid their recovery by driving in vans from Massachusetts to the DC area to personally hand deliver iPods, iPads, Nooks, magazines, letters of support from school/children, headphones and more to the wounded.

How it helps:

  • A rebailitating soldier enjoyes an escape to his favorite song
  • A bedridden pilot has freedom to connect with loved ones, no matter how far away.
  • A wounded veteran gets lost in a book, even if he can no longer hold a paper copy.
  • Complex medical schedules can be managed in the palm of a hand.

When we visit with Veterans: The IFWV team makes 3 trips per year to the DC area, working in between trips to fundraise.

Other facts:

  • •    IFWV is an all-volunteer organization.
  • •    Over 80% of funds raised goes directly to the purchase of electronics and other gifts for the veterans.
  • •    The remaining 20% is spent on costs of driving to the DC-area to deliver the gifts, plus marketing and small administration expenses.

The evening will be joined by folk rock singer-songwriter Chelsea Barry and the Bob Marley tribute reggae band, Hope Road.

Ticket price will also include one free drink. Attendees will have a chance to taste the bounty of the ocean, learn about sustainable fisheries, dance to the music and bid on an awesome lineup of auction prizes while raising funds for a great organization.
