Thursday Recap!

January 9, 2014

It’s a big day for making Greg feel old.  Guitarist Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame turns 70, and it’s the 30th anniversary of Van Halen’s album 1984.  Half of you are cringing.  Half of you are thinking, “I wasn’t even born in 1984.”

One of the big stories this morning is that Michael Buoniconti, Superintendent of the Mohawk Regional School District got permission from the School Committee to study the feasibility of a 4-day school week, the argument being that it would cut costs with regard to busing, utilities, etc.  We asked for your thoughts, and most people felt that going to that kind of schedule would be an inconvenience for parents, as many of them work full-time and would then have to make child care arrangements for that one day the kids were off.  Some studies have shown an increase in classroom performance in districts that have shifted to a 4-day week, but many texters pointed out that kids are already tapped out attention-wise at the end of a normal school day, so adding another 90 minutes may be counter-productive.  Read more about the proposal here.  What do you think of a 4-day school week?

We spoke with New England Patriot WR Julian Edelman during the Hill-man Huddle.  Not surprisingly, Julian told us that the guys are focused on, excited for, and getting prepped for Saturday.  Thank you, Bill Belichick interview handbook.  LB asked Julian if he does anything differently mentally to prepare for Andrew Luck based on Luck’s past performance this season, and naturally Julian told us that what Andrew has done in other games happened… IN OTHER GAMES… so basically, it’s moot, and they are looking ahead to the next game.  “Practice execution becomes game reality.”  Greg asked what Edelman’s thought were on the Colts signing Deion Branch, and he said he was more focused on the secondary than what Deion was doing.  Oh, and if you haven’t seen JE make a smoothie yet, have at it:

Our pal Dave Andelman brought some delicious steak & cheese subs, and naturally, LB was all over them.  We heard about Dave’s harrowing road trip back from Florida after JetBlue cancelled a ton of flights, and his many visits to Waffle Houses in the South.  The Phantom Gourmet Steak & Cheese Throwdown happens Monday, 1/13, at Howl at the Moon Boston.  Get your tickets here.

Some other stories we discussed:

"The Wolf of Wall Street" tops the list of movies with the most swears, coming in with over 500 f-bombs.

We inducted the creators of the Burrito Box into the Mantown Hall of Fame.

Did you know a simple yawn can collapse your lung?

Don't forget, tomorrow we will have actor David Koechner (Anchorman, The Office) live in studio.  He will be doing the sports minute in character as Champ Kind in the 8 o'clock hour.  WHAMMY!
