Fifteen artists have been nominated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Among these artists include Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, The Cars, Yes, Chicago, and Steve Miller. Of the fifteen, approximately only five acts will be chosen to take part in the Hall of Fame induction class, which will be announced in December.

The other nominees include Los Lobos, Nine Inch Nails, Janet Jackson, NWA, The Smiths, Chaka Khan, Chic, The JB's, and The Spinners. As part of a new initiative, fans will have the opportunity to cast their votes through Rolling Stone to determine the final inductees. But according to the rules, and given the scale of this honor, the fan vote will barely hold any influence on the final result.

In order to be nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, artists need to have released their first single or album in 1990 or earlier. This is the first year Chicago, Cheap Trick, The Cars, Los Lobos, and Steve Miller have been nominated. Other artists like The Black Crowes were among other newly eligible artists, but were not officially nominated.

The 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to take place in April 2016 in New York City.
