The Timeline Of Tool's New Album Updates

March 12, 2018

Tool is currently working on their first album in twelve years, and nobody is more aware of that than the members of Tool. Now that the band has announced that they are hard at work in the studio and their producer for the album is "Evil" Joe Barresi, we are closer to its completion now than we have ever been.

Now Tool has been saying that they have been working on this album for a while. So let's take a look back at some of their previous album updates, some dating as far back as 2008!

  • 2008: Maynard James Keenan says they were going to start working on the new album right away, although he was focused on his side-project Puscifer and their album vV Is for Vagina.
  • 2010: Although the only recordings going on in 2010 involving the members of Tool were on other bands' records. While Kenan continued to work with Puscifer, the band's website said that other Tool members were working on the new album's instrumentals.
  • 2012: The band's webmaster claimed that he heard some of Tool's new music. Some later believed that his testimony suggested that the band was more than halfway done.
  • 2013: After two of Tool's members were injured in two separate scooter accidents. Drummer Danny Carey said that despite their injuries, their new allbum would be released later that year.
  • 2014: The band blames a lawsuit for hindering their new album's progress.
  • 2015: Tool debuts their new song "Descending."

  • 2016: Tool's website indicated that they still had a few shorter songs to write and arrange. Meanwhile, bassist Justin Chancellor said that they were still in the writing process, and were occucpied working exclusively on one of their newer songs at the time.
  • 2017: Danny announces that the new Tool album will be out by the end of 2017, but Keenan says it could arrive as late as 2018
  • 2018: Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine reveals that he heard some of Tool's new material and was blown away by it. Keenan corrects a fan's theory by saying that the new album will not be arriving in the summer. Tool members invite special guests in the studio including Sebastian Bach to listen to their rehearsal of the album's new tracks. Keenan announces in Feb 2018 that the words and melodies on all of the songs except for one were complete. In March 2018, guitarist Adam Jones reveals that they are officially in the studio working on the album via his Instagram. The band's main website also released a statement supporting Jones, saying, "We are very excited to announce what is sure to be welcome news for both fans of TOOL and prog-metal enthusiasts in general.  After all the years of writing and arranging (and re-arranging) at the band’s loft, I can at this time officially report that the guys have moved into a major studio where the recording process for the next album is about to begin in earnest."
