On May 17th, 2010, the rock world was left stunned after the news broke that Ronnie James Dio had passed away at the age of 67 from metastasized stomach cancer, a disease that many experts believed could have been prevented. At the time of his diagnosis, Dio had not been tested for signs of stomach or colorectal cancer for at least ten years, which the American Cancer Foundation recommends that all men and women do once they reach the age of 50.

Dio had been experiencing abdominal pains when he had himself check out by a doctor in late 2009, which later lead to his cancer diagnosis. He proceeded to undergo intense chemotherapy treatments and would later have to cancel the Heaven & Hell tour that following summer. His final public appearance would be at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods Awards where he would recieve the award for "Best Metal Singer."

Dio would tell media outlets about the difficulties of going through chemotherapy as a very exhausting experience, but still maintained a positive outlook, believing that he would win in his battle against cancer.

On May 4th, Dio released a statement to his fans, thanking them for their endless support through his ordeal. “With your continued love and support, we will carry on and thrive. There will be other tours, more music, more life and much more magic.” Sadly, on May 16th, his cancer had aggresively spread and he was pronounced dead at 3pm by his wife and manager, Wendy Dio.

“Today my heart is broken,” Wendy Dio said in a statement. “Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us… Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”

“Ronnie loved what he did, making music and performing onstage," said Tony Iommi. "He loved his fans so much. He was a kind man and would put himself out to help others. I can honestly say it’s truly been an honor to play at his side for all these years. His music will live on forever. The man with the magic voice is a star amongst stars, a true professional. I’ll miss you so much, my dear friend.”
