Why we NEED to help Haiti, I can't believe I have to write this!

OK everyone. I can't keep quiet anymore! I am so tired of reading comments about how "we should be helping our own people first" and not helping the people of Haiti!
In the U.S., when you are hungry,  there is a food bank... when you are sick,  it is ILLEGAL for you to be turned away at a hospital... when you have no job, there is unemployment... and when you are homeless, there is a shelter! I know that this country is not perfect, but on our worst day... we are better off , than the best days in Haiti.

I would think as Americans, you would feel a kinship with Haiti. The Haitian people were slaves from Africa, who rebelled against their captors, and won... they created their own country so they could live in peace! Sound familiar? They have been ravaged by war, natural disasters and greedy leaders... Sound familiar?  Read the history of Haiti here!

After 9/11 the world donated money, search teams and resources to us... After Katrina they did the same. See the list here

If you want to know what would happen, if we just left Haiti to help themselves... with no infrastructure or medicine... With no security and no schools... TAKE A LOOK AT AFGHANISTAN! That country was ravaged by war ( which we were involved with... secretly), and when they needed schools and hospitals... we left! The people with the biggest guns took over and resented those who left them alone... US!
And look at where we are now... Back in Afghanistan!
So if you think that it is stupid for us to be lending a helping hand to the Haitian people... Imagine what would happen in 20 years, with a country 250 miles off of our coast if we didn't help!

And by the way... The same RED CROSS that is in Haiti right now helping the victims... Is in L.A. helping Americans who are flooded out of their homes, and they are the same RED CROSS who were here in Mass. last winter when the ice storm hit!

So, I wonder how someone who was raised in the greatest country on Earth,  could write a comment on Facebook that says... "F*CK the people in Haiti, we have to worry about ourselves first!"
It makes me sick to read something like that! You should be ashamed of yourself!

I bet if you asked every Soldier and Marine on the ground in Afghanistan right now... "Would you rather be shooting people or helping to save orphaned children"? They would say... I'd rather save the children...

The men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines are in Haiti right now doing what many people will not... They are helping! Once again, they make me proud to be an American!

I sympathize with you Carrie, unfortunately I have to disagree. I just want to point out first that on the Donation list, you don't see Haiti on either list. They didn't donate anything. Yes it's sad that we are in foreign countries fighting a pointless wars. But, we are in a time where we cannot spend money that is not even ours first of all (it all belongs to China). America has to end their reign of being the dominate power in the world. We have to step down from our position for the time being. America has far to many problems to deal with. It is time that America closes the boarders and state us as a neutral country. There can be no more big brother America. other countries can fend for themselves. Why should we be the only ones that have to care for Haiti? Did you know that the only country to respond thus, far is Iceland? Why can't other countries give support? Does the world honestly believe that it is our duty to save the world?

Alot of food banks ask too much personal information now to bother going, like ssn of all family members and they give out expired, or near expired food. Unemployment gets taxed, so when your still out of a job and have to file, where do you get the money? And job or no job, you go to the hospital, you still have to pay that bill, which is ridiculously overpriced. The shelters in Boston are known to house drug addicts and people with deadly diseases. The people there would knife you while you sleep for your pants. I think I would rather live in the street. No offense to your posting or how you feel. These are just some things I've seen. I just think America needs some serious attention. Yea, we're not perfect, but why not work on it.

Actually matt the day after germany donated 2.7 million as reported by channel 7 news before 7am the day after. i have to say though from interactions i have had in the past i think refugees get treated better than an average joe. they get money to get housing and food and health care while also getting free education. I was born and raised here my entire life and have been paying taxes since my first summer job but i get the bare minimum in financial aid because i want to better myself. 100 million dollars could help a lot of young students get through med school. I won't say that we should not have helped because America has a role as a world leader but i am angry at the fact that in 2 days they were dropping supplies on haiti yet look how long it took them to help the victims of Katrina which is our own country. charity starts at home.

I agree 100%, Carrie. It seems that compassion and charity are overrated these days. Never mind that Haiti is the poorest and least developed country in the western hemisphere, never mind that their death toll has long exceeded Katrina's and 9/11's combined. I am exceedingly thankful for the organizations and servicemen/women who have been working hard to help the Haitians. This jaded and apathetic attitude we've been seeing a lot lately is absolutely sickening. Charity begins at home! they cry, but I wonder if anyone's thought about that phrase any more than they've been told to? Rock on, Carrie.

In addition to what you have said, D, I wonder just how much "Charity" those same people showed to the residents of Loisianna, New York, Florida, and even Nantucket. If you're not gonna grow a pair and show "Charity at home" then shut the f*ck up when people who did want to help the Haitian people. I was a cadet in the air force when Nantucket was hit by a hurricane, and you know what? I was on the first transport there to help pull people out of the water. I did that for 17 straight hours and still got up the next day to go to school. 9/11, My squadran was one of the only military auxillery groups to go to NY and help with the search and rescue of dozens of people, and we weren't "Just following orders." We VOLUNTEERED. When Katrina struck the gulf coast, we sent vital supplies like food, medicine, and even clothes of own to the people who needed them. I was 18 our youngest members were between 12 and 14. Honestly, what the f*ck have any of the peoplewho say "worry about us, worry about us. Help or own before you help others" done for America?

Everybody is having a hard time now thanks to Bush and the crapstorm he left behind. I live on disability so I don't have alot. Still, I know I'm in a better place than many others, so when I can I give to shelters here and when I heard about Haiti during the playoffs I called the number they gave. It should be an automatic response to want to help others and Carrie I share your sickness with those that make excuses and hide behind our problems or say if they didn't ever help us why should we help them. That's beside the point. Helping people isn't about getting something first or in return you do it because it's the right thing. And I'd just like to add to Paul a big thank you for what you have do and have done. And in response to your last comment Paul it's done nothing for us. No wonder other countries get/are pissed at us. Geez, leave the agenda behind and just do what's right!
