MOVIE REVIEW: Project X

What do you get when you profit off the dreams of insecure college students?

A lot of people might say Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but right now, I’m calling it Project X. This movie does exactly what it needs to. It puts the wet dream of every high school and college student’s fantasy house party in front of his face and holds it there for an hour and a half.

The film is captured in the ever popular growing “found footage” style which had been pioneered by awful horror movies and low budget celebrity sex tapes.  Project X, however, is different because for once, it works. Documenting the party of the millennium, the movie is entertaining, out of control and hilarious. Its story is one that we’ve heard a number of times before, but this time around, Project X brings with it a different attitude, along with plenty of booze.

The movie follows high school nerd, Thomas, and his only two male friends, Costa, and JB. It’s Thomas’ 17th birthday and it just so happens his parents are leaving town and make the obviously regrettable mistake of trusting him with the house. Of course, out of human nature and their lust to get laid and become popular, Thomas and his friends decide to throw and document the school’s next best party that will change their current social and virginity status forever. With nothing more than a little social networking by the loudmouthed friend, Costa, the party slowly escalates to a rave, and then into a full-fledged riot.

Now its easy for anyone under the age of 30 to get wet from dreaming about a party like Project X, but what can’t be ignored by anyone, young or old, is the excitement to see what will happen next to Thomas, his friends, his dog, and his house. Overall, Project X brings hilarity in the form of juvenile chaos while at the same time sending a message of consequence to those who lust for popularity.
