Slutty Wednesday

In a protest against the school's new dress code, students at Stuyvesant High School in New York City took a stand against the administration. Yesterday, nearly 100 students participated in a student-organized "Slutty Wednesday" protest, according to the New York Post. The students -- both boys and girls -- took to the streets of lower Manhattan in revealing clothing, with flyers that read, "Redress the Dress Code."

The dress code in question bans the exposure of midriffs, visible underwear, shoulders and lower backs, and mandates that the hemlines of all shorts, skirts and dresses fall below the line of the fingertips. It also prohibits students from wearing articles of clothing with images or words deemed inappropriate.

Freshman Lucy Greider, who claims that she’s been sent to the office 10 times this year for dress code violations, told the Post: “We work our asses off here and school is about learning. Clothing is not important."

Some students say that the dress code is unfair to more full-figured girls. One studenttold the New York Times that certain body shapes are more targeted, and that curvier girls are more frequently called out for dress code violations. Others insist that not being able to wear more skin-baring items of clothing is a comfort issue when the weather gets hot.

Poor Students.....
Get a clue poor over privledge high school students....First some students in other places don't even have the opportunity to have an education and 2nd you'll soon learn you will not be doing as you want and please when you get to the work force. Wanna wear sexy or loud clothes, do it on your own time! Right now our tax paying dollars which are paying to train your As*.

Good for them.
Fact: Adolescence is a vital part of psychosocial development. It's literally all about discovering your identity. Clothing and self-expressing are absolutely necessary to developing and solidifying your sense of self. The fact that these "over privledge" high school kids organized a clever and peaceful counter to the code actually speaks volumes of the maturity of their response. Furthermore, many schools don't have air conditioning. I'm not sure how long ago you were in high school, but I remember it well, and summer really sucked. Quite frankly, as a girl who has always had large breasts, I frequently got called out on the dress code... even though my tank top straps were wide enough, and my skirt was long enough. There's no good answer to the problem, and while these kids should be grateful to have an education at all, you can't write off their opinions just because they're young. Stop being "that guy" and hating on the young people because you don't remember what it's like to be a teenager.

@ Good for them.
Seriously? I went to private school with a mandated uniform, and yet somehow I managed to find my own identity without griping about my clothes. Our skirts had to be no more than 2 inches above our knees, could only wear polo's during the summer months, and had to have button downs the rest of the year. Yet all of us seemed to figure out who we were without needing to show all the skin we've got.

For all of you.
For one I don't think a few people wearing what they want to school inappropriate or not Is not allowing them to get the right educaton I am in highschool and i see people who dress poorly and that show a lot of skin and they have good grades and know a lot. sure everyone who dresses like a "sl*t" doesnt have respect for themselves but it just shows how they want to be looked upon. SO i guess it doesnt matter about what 1 or 2 people look like because there is a lot more students that dress well;in exactly what they want to wear as well its just notlooks its about thier personality as ell.

I wonder sometimes
I mean I could be wrong, but as far as I know the dress code that the students have a problem with is pretty much the typical dress code at all public schools (at least the ones around where I live) and I don't think that it has changed much in the past 4 years I have been out of high school. So I think these students should stop complaining, they are there to learn and if they were mature they would be able to express themselves through their academic studies, extra curricular activities, arts, etc and not through their clothing choices
