This new trailer for Soundgarden's upcoming album King Animal proves they're just as weird as ever. That's one of the things I always loved about them. In even their most accessible music there is a dark weirdness weaving it's way through the layers of sound. Most of which I attribute to Guitarist Kim Thayill. He is never one to play it straight. Always making his guitar sound like it's a broadcast coming from another world or a person screaming trapped in a crawl space.
Last week I was lucky enough to get a good listen to a new song called "Been Way To Long". It had that chugging groove to it similar to stuff on Badmotorfinger like "Rusty Cage" or "Drawing Flies". But it had a big chorus with a touch of Queen-like voice layering. Plus a spooky vault door slamming in a long hallway sound and what I thought was a shovel digging in dirt. Yeah, keeping it weird.
