Former Alice In Chains Bassist Mike Starr was found dead in his home in Salt Lake City yesterday. Police say they did find drugs at the scene. Mike was with the band during what some have said was Alice In Chains best work. I actually think "Jar Of Flies" is their finest release, but "Dirt" is not far behind. Starr was actually dismissed during the recording of "Dirt". The first song I hear from AIC was "We Die Young". I immediately fell in love with the dark, heavy, snake-like groove and the sweet harmonies laid atop of them.
Starr's substance abuse was, unfortunately, well documented during his appearance on "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew". AIC drummer Sean Kinney felt very strongly about Starr's participation in that show, "It exploits people at their lowest point, when they're not in their right mind, and the sad part is, this is like entertainment for people when it's actually a life and death situation," he said. "I don't think it helps anybody and it makes entertainment out of people's possible death, and that's pathetic and it's stupid. So I don't support that show at all and I think it's pretty disgusting."
Many also believed Starr was responsible for the death of late AIC singer layne Staley. Supposedly he was the last to see Staley and could have called for help but didn't. I'm sure the two are working it out now, wherever they are.
